Hi there now we all know that quality, unique content is a ‘must have’ for all your online activity, on the website, blog, in your articles even in your forum postings – but how to generate it is sometimes an altogether different matter. For my wife Sam and I it’s normally me who does most of the writing grind and Sam’s the proofreader and ‘does it make sense’ checker.

Now for me coming from a journalistic family and having spent most of my working life in advertising and marketing you’d have thought – no problems it would be easy, but I tell you know it not, not at all. Do you remember writing papers in high school or college? No matter how many pages you wrote, it never seemed to get any easier. When you were writing course work or papers meant late nights in front of the computer screen with red burning eyes wishing you could go to bed. Unfortunately, for many of us when we have our content writer hat on it feels like this when we have to write our own web content.

While some people certainly enjoy the challenge of writing, others liken it to being the worst thing ever to have to do. Some people would rather do anything at all than crank out web content, are you one of them? Step 1. – Create An Outline

One way to do this is to create an effective outline before you start writing. The outline is the blueprint for the text you’re going to write. It guides you along from the introduction through the body to the conclusion. Making a good outline also keeps you from getting stuck in the middle of the article and not knowing where to go next. It works out the kinks and hassles before they can occur. It speeds up the writing process and makes it feel like just a matter of talking while you type. Here are some tips on how to make outlines that are effective.

Step 2. -Brainstorming Is Key

First of all, brainstorm. Write down ideas as they come to you. Imagine that you are your reader. What is going to attract you to this article? Set aside some time for doing no writing at all but just brainstorming ideas. You should already have your research and information ready. Look over your notes so that you know the information more or less by heart. This will also aid the writing process.

Step 3. -Break It Down Into Sub Points

Next, divide the article into its various sub-points. You’ll have an overall focus and point of the article, so now you’re looking for the natural divisions. For each of these sub-topics, just as with the article as a whole, think of attention-grabbing titles and enticing first sentences. Consider each one another mini-article to pull your reader along. Make sure that each of these presents its information quickly and concisely so that the reader doesn’t get bogged down.

Step 4. – Start Building

Once you’ve done this, your article is like the frames of a house. It’s all set up and ready to go. Now it’s time to start building. Starting at the beginning, move along your article connecting all of the topics to each other. This is the article’s body. At the end of your article, write a conclusion that quickly summarizes its most important parts. Step 5. – Check & Double Check Once it’s written, you’ve got your first draft. Don’t consider it done quite yet. You may have to rewrite it a time or two before it’s perfect. That’s why we call it a draft. It’s not finished yet. Don’t be embarrassed as you read over it; it’s not going to be published. Change the things you don’t like and tweak it until you see nothing you think you should change.

While re-reading your article, you might want to refer to your outline to make sure it follows it correctly. Things might change a little when you do the actual writing, but make sure it sticks to the point. Otherwise, the time you spend making the outline will go to waste. Throughout the whole process, your outline should be the core of the article. This will ensure that it says perfectly what you want to say.

Just like a website, your blog will not attract visitors by itself. You need to actively promote your blog to drive traffic to it. Here are some ways you can promote your blog:

1. Make sure your article is interesting to read.

2. Find blog directories and submit your blog there. Type “blog directories” into Google and see what comes up.

3. Ping your blog. There are several blog ping services online. Type “ping blog” into Google, and use the ones on the first page.

4. Use the article you have written and submit that to article directories, and link them back to your blog. There are also article submission services out there that can do that for you. 8. Find classified ad sites, and write an ad for your article and link back to it.

9. Put an automatic signature on your email that sends with your email. Everyone you email or who you reply to will see your link in your signature and click on it

10. Tweet about your blog on Twitter. Retweet a bit later.

11. Post a link to your blog in your updates on Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Ecademy and other social networking sites.

12. Use Google Adwords to place an advertisement that links to your blog. Note: this costs money.

13. You can also advertise on other social networking sites. This may cost money too.

14. Find websites with similar content, so a tutor can find a school website or a travel agent can find a hotel or resort website, read their articles, and ask them to link a word or two to your blog.

Promoting your blog in these ways will also create links back to your blog which is really useful for Search Engine Optimisation. The more quality links you have back to your blog, the higher your website will rank in the search engines, and the better chance you have in getting found on the first page in the search engines in your area. This is what you want to happen because people who look for your product or service will then find you easily.

When I first learned about how many articles I had to write I got very depressed. It was just going to be far too much to do. Sounds easy but its not, here’s what happened to me early on. When I first started out, I wrote some copy, read all right, put it up and thought naively as it transpired that I’d suddenly have loads of traffic – blimey, didn’t think that one though at all, then a friend said to me ‘you did do your keyword research?’

1. Article length. Write articles of 400 to 500 words if you are going to submit them to article directories. Write articles of 200 to 250 words if you are going to post them in your blog.

2. Maximizing an article use. One trick that works very well is to write a 200 and 250 word blog article and post it in your blog. Bookmark it to social directories using Only Wire.

Take your blog article and add more content to it until you are at 400 words or more. Then submit it to the top article directories.

3. Article submission tool. I use Submit Your Article because I can reach hundreds of article directories with their service.

I also like their patented Article Leverage Program for rewriting articles and making each one unique before it is submitted. Once you get the hang of this it only takes about 15 minutes per article.

4. Proofread your articles. Since I use a dictating tool to write my articles, sometimes the words I say do not come out the same way in the article.

My rationale here is that Google owns You Tube, and Yahoo is the second largest search engine, so I want my videos submitted to theses sites for potential search engine rankings.

6. Write more. It is a simple fact that the more articles you have online the more benefit you are going to get from them. Most Internet marketers do not truly appreciate the enormity of the Internet.

Once you compile a list of the most searched keywords, you will have a much better understanding of the topics within your niche that your target audience is looking for. Your list of keywords should be inserted in your article only in the appropriate places, and where it makes logical sense.

2. Research your chosen topic. You need to find out if your niche topic is going to generate a viable interest to your targeted prospects. You also need to know what kind of competition you will up against. Look up articles or other related resources within your particular niche to gather as much information as possible. You want to make your article not only relevant but interesting and exciting to read. It is imperative that you discuss why your product is of benefit to your prospects so they will take action and become customers.

3. Create your title. You will have but one chance to capture the interest of your visitor. You already have somewhat of an outline about your content so concentrate on a benefit driven title that will be attractive to your readers. Your title needs to be short, one line, and generate enough of an interest for your visitor to commit to continue reading.

4. Begin your introduction with questions. Your end goal is to capture your prospects attention so they will read your entire article(s). The proper questions about the topic you are covering should peak their interest. You are about to share some vital information and offering compelling questions could very well generate an excitement within your reader. These questions will most likely be the same questions you had when doing your own research. The same or similar questions will have an impact on your prospect’s curiosity, so don’t take them lightly. Think about them and use questions wisely to spark an interest.

THE DON’TS

1. Don’t make spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors. Do you want your text to appear that the author actually knows very little about the subject at hand? Do you want to “load” your article with a bunch of keywords that make no literary sense? Readers need to have confidence that the author is an expert and these types of errors display a sense of unprofessionalism. These types of errors mean you have just lost your visitor. Make sure you do a spell check, and then have another person proof read it so your article flows properly and generates interest.

2. Don’t present a bunch of hype and hard sell tactics to your readers. You need to present the benefits of what this product specifically does for you and why you use it. The reader only wants to know what is in it for them, so that is what you convey. Hype and self promotion is a turn off, and your visitors will see right through it. Have a friend read your article and see if they can answer one simple question. “What is in this article that benefits me?”

3. Don’t make your article so broad in scope that your visitors cannot grasp the concept or just can’t figure out any benefit for them. Make sure your approach is in-depth and offer your expertise on the topic. You must have originality, definition, brevity, and relativity. Your readers only have so much time to gather the specific information they are seeking. If it is alluring and brief in scope, you will generate the interest necessary to keep them reading.

4. This relates to Number 3 in the DO’S. Don’t dissuade your potential readers right off the bat with a dull or boring title. The title or headline is usually the initial reason why a visitor will even think about perusing your article. A lackluster title means your visitor will pass it over and continue to search for the information they want. Don’t make your headline too long (one line), make it brief, and explore some keyword ideas that might help to optimize your title.

5. Avoid plagiarism, and outsourcing or buying articles for your topic. Can you do appropriate research and find a multitude of ideas for your article? Of course you can, and we all get ideas from other people when doing our research. You don’t have to be a professional writer to create good, quality copy for your article. Once you start the process, you will only get better at it as you go along. I urge you to be original, though, as plagiarism is certainly not condoned. Most article directories will discover outright plagiarism and won’t even publish such an article. So, do the research, and let the article be yours. Outsourcing articles is also not a great idea. You might do it just once so you can develop a template for your own use, but you will never master this art form if all you do is outsource articles. This might also cost more than your budget allows, and you will defeat the purpose of creating a profitable on line business.

6. Don’t expect immediate results. Article writing has enormous weight in getting traffic to your destination site. Your expectations, however, should not be extraordinarily high for quick returns. Article writing and submitting articles for publication takes time to have any credible effect. Be prepared to write two articles per week and submit them every week to your chosen article directories or ezines. The nature of this beast is that solid copy in your articles will have a snow ball effect and eventually start generating serious traffic. Just like word of mouth; it’s the best advertising, but the slowest. So do your due diligence, create excellent copy for your content, establish a banner headline, and your results will become a reality over the course of a few months.

People are looking for information they want at the moment. Provide this information in a concise, entertaining, and professional manner. Provide the reason(s) for them to continue reading and eventually make a purchase at your destination site by answering their nagging question: “What’s in it for me”.
