SEO & Analytics Advice

Monday, October 10th, 2011

By Johan Lars

Now this is definitely a subject that when anyone mentions it in a room stuffed with SEO’s you’ll receive a broad amount of differing opinions, and possibly just a little excited dialogue going down.

I’m guessing it really depends upon the reason why you become involved in SEO in the first place. Could it possibly be for the money or perhaps vanity? In my situation it’s about cold hard cash as well as providing myself the lifestyle I’d like for my loved ones. Should I become all excited and lose sleep at nighttime regarding my search rankings? Basic answer, absolutely not.

The manner in which I view it is this, the specific search rankings really mean absolutely nothing to me in all actuality. It’s all about the money. This is exactly what really should matter I believe.

But wait, how the heck do you know which of them to go for I hear you inquire. Well fortunately that’s a fairly simple one to answer. Web analytics. I personally believe that all Search engine optimisation efforts and techniques must be influenced through the analytics data. If you’re not carrying out this then go give yourself a good tough slap and also have a ice cold shower. Next return and re-focus your attitude and get that analytics data streaming. You should also be A/B testing and carrying out MVT tests to test conversion.

Analytics is the thing that sets apart the men from the boys. Would you like to depend on pure blind chance or assault the SERP’s from a spot where specialised ability drives your success? In the event you have answered blind luck go slap your self harder this time around.

I hear on practically an every day basis individuals carrying on about their top 10 Google positions, yet sometimes they don’t understand I actually do SEO, so when I inquire further in regards to the phrases I simply think oh boy, that’s rubbish. Do you really earn money from ranking for a phrase which has received zero queries previously? Needless to say you don’t. If your website gives you no cash then simply what’s the purpose? Only to point out you rank for your name? That’s total vanity. Anyone having an internet presence has a minimum of 5 to 10 number 1 search positions on Google regarding something. These are generally basic long tail results which are completely inconsequential.

Let’s put it basically. Just one top ten position on google that creates you cash will be worth thousands of top positions that produce you nothing . Organic search isn’t no cost traffic remember. It will require time and organizing as well as everyone’s effort which costs something. You ought to determine what you’re worth an hour at some point, you could be amazed.

Exactly what can you take from this article? The reality is this, if you wish to get serious about generating income online you need to get your nose buried straight into web analytics.

In the event you haven’t put in place a Google analytics account then stop everything, go to Google and get it taken care of right now. Google analytics is free of charge and straightforward to utilize. There are numerous excellent video tutorials about it’s use at Google therefore go have a look now.

A Brief Description and Basics of SEO

Monday, May 30th, 2011

There are a lot of things in the computer world that people tend to find mysterious and they see as touching upon black magic. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of those things that ranks way up there on the mystery and black magic scale. Today, the term has expanded to Search Engine Marketing which includes paid advertising and other online marketing activities but for our purposes we’ll stick with SEO.

SEO is the practice of promoting a web site by increasing its position in search results on the major search engines. Those search engines comprise of Google mainly but also include Yahoo!, Bing, and a few others. The idea is to make the site appear higher in the list of search results than similar sites. This is referred to as “organic” SEO meaning that the rank came as a result of plain old search results rather than having to pay for placement on the search engine.

There’s a lot of value in getting it right as far as SEO goes. First of all it’s free and second of all, web searches are becoming the primary means of finding information. Primary among the search engines is Google and according to some market research, Google commanded an incredible 81.22% of the global market share in June 2009. Google’s success is punctuated by the fact that the word “Google” has found its way into the dictionary.

The primary goal of the search engines is to bring relevant search results to their users. When a user types in a search phrase, a search engine is successful when it delivers the information the user is searching for. If a search engine is unable to deliver relevant information it simply won’t be long on the digital scene.

Performing this feat is the result of a mix of highly sophisticated programming, incredibly powerful servers, and perhaps some eye of newt and toe of frog thrown in for good measure.

Seriously, however, the full mechanics of how search engines rank web pages are kept highly confidential. It simply has to be that way or the bad guys of the world would use the knowledge to artificially inflate their own rankings.

There are some fundamental truths in SEO and it is fair to say that search engines today consider the following when ranking a given web page:

The content of the page – what it’s about, what words are used prominently.

What words are used in the title of the page?

What words are used in the URL of the page?

What words are highlighted on the page?

What internal links (links from other pages on the same site) point to it?

How many external links point to it and more importantly, whether those pages are relevant to the page’s subject matter?

The text used to form the internal and external links.

Even the age of the domain name plays a role in its ranking!

There is a lot more involved of course and that list could have gone on for a while. Factors such as keywords, the use of images and Flash animations, and the design of the site itself also play a role in a page’s ranking. Good SEO checklists can be found on the web but probably the most important thing to think about doesn’t involve search engines at all. That’s the quality of the content.

Ultimately a search engine’s goal is to return relevant information to its visitors. As such, search engines have become very sophisticated at figuring out whether or not content is relevant to the search term and indeed, whether a human would find it interesting.

SEO is a fascinating subject and the search engines are incredibly complex examples of computer programming. They are so good in fact that the best advice one could give someone looking to increase their placement is – write your content for people and not the search engines. You’ll be rewarded for it.

This part is important, so pay attention.

SEO In Layman’s Terms

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Are you looking for more customers? Do you have a website, but realize that your website is nowhere to be found on the search engine results? Have you heard about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but do not know where to start?

If you say YES to any of the above questions – then the following informative article is for you! We will define SEO and show you what to consider and which hidden pitfalls to avoid.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. It’s a buzz word that is being thrown around all over the internet. However, while there is a lot of misconception spread by so called gurus, SEO is not something that should be feared as a complex thing. In simple terms, SEO, is the process of increasing the exposure of your website on the major search engines. In other worlds, if you increase your rankings on Google, Yahoo or Bing, you ultimately will increase the traffic or website visits that comes to your website. With more targeted traffic you will have a better chance of increasing your sales or leads.

For instance, if you’re looking for a Michigan SEO company and are trying to target users of a certain demographic, you need to modify your website to attract those visitors! That means that your site has to have keywords, articles, or mark up language that is recognized by search engines.

Why search engines?

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing are the life blood of the internet in many ways. Without them you wouldn’t be able to find what you’re looking for online. That of course poses a different kind of problem – how to stand apart from the rest.

Standing apart from the rest or isolating Michigan SEO (as an example) means that you can’t simply throw a website online and hope for the best. After the site is designed it gets retrofitted with tags in the code to help search engines find the site. Moreover, link building is an important off-site SEO task.

The more relevant the keywords on a website are, and the more links (votes) point to your site, the more likely that people will find it. This kind of management is important for exposure. Without these pieces your site might get lost in the vast ocean that is the internet. When choosing the right SEO company make sure they are not just speaking marketing talk but actually can offer substance.

Approaching Michigan SEO agencies, make sure that they have a portfolio of past work. This should include a list of past and current clients, websites, key terms and where they rank today as well as a time frame how long it took to get them to the current results. If there are no signs of the companies nor the websites made by the company, maybe they aren’t the firm you want to use. Furthermore, you can easily check whether the SEO work of the company in question provides excellent SEO work by checking the search engine results by doing a simple search It’s hit or miss, and really hard to hide results. However, I also have to mention that several of the more successful SEO companies often work with Non Disclosure Agreements (NDA) and therefore can not show most of their clients list or results.

Summarizing, good SEO is important because it means that you’ll get targeted traffic through ought the lifespan of your website. For many small businesses, SEO can help them compete by increasing the visibility of their website and targeting people who are actively searching for their product or services.

This part is important, so pay attention.

Advanced SEO Techniques

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

There are 3 rules that you MUST follow to make your site a success.

1. Only target keywords that are receiving traffic

2. Only target keywords that have a commercial value.

3. Target keywords with a low enough competition.

These 3 rules may seem obvious, but it is because one or all of them are ignored that so many sites fail.

SEO is the art of getting traffic to your site by optimising the on page content and off page links to your site.

1. Keyword Research: Need to brainstorm exactly what your target market is typing into Google. All Search Engine Optimisation starts here. Good keyword research is a vital factor in SEO

2. Create a Local Business Listing. With this you should easily be able to get highly ranked for your business and your local area. (If you aren’t running a conventional business with a specific geographical location, then this will not be necessary)

3. Link Building. Probably the most important part.

Create a large number of powerful backlinks to your site.

4. RSS feeds. The majority of websites, directories and blogs have RSS feeds. If they don’t then they can be created. These need to be submitted to the top 40 or so feed directories. These feed directories themselves have feeds which can be submitted! Feeds only need to be submitted once and automatically update

Creating blogs, articles and feeds produces a large network of linking, gives your optimisation a backbone, then whenever content is added within the network the feeds are automatically updated. Google loves it.

5. Publish Press Releases. Each time you launch a new product or service, or just have an announcement then get it out as a press release. PR sites vary, some are free some you have to pay for but they are another great source of traffic and link juice.

6. Bookmark site pages, blogs and articles on the social bookmarking scene.

7. Utilise Twitter and Facebook to continue building reputation and customers. Twitter is just going to grow and grow, would be mad not to start using it properly right now. This can be automated to an extent.

8. If you aren’t already doing this then start building a list (email list – customers and potential customers). Would be a good idea to have a monthly newsletter for your customers, another great way to maintain contact and create a long term relationship with your customers, as well as informing them of any news in your sector or company. This would have to be an ‘opt-in’ list where the customers click a link to confirm they want to join the list. This eliminates any accusations of SPAM, and there will be an ‘unsubscribe’ link with every message sent.

9. Then there are the on-page factors. This would include tweaking the content to optimise for a particular keyword. Employing ‘nofollow’ tags in your pages to control the flow of page rank, for instance putting a ‘nofollow’ tag on links to your T’s and C’s would stop any page rank flowing to this page, but would still allow customers to click on it and view it.

We can also manage all the content for you. Write articles, blogs, site content, newsletters….anything! You may wish to do this yourself, and that is good too!

How to Become an SEO Expert

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Do you have a website, a quality product but need targeted traffic. Search engine optimization is the foundation of getting organic traffic to any site or blog. Today were going to discuss several simple yet powerful ways of making your site SEO friendly and getting you that targeted traffic you need.

1) If you want your website to rank high in the search engines you must have quality, fresh content that is updated regularly. If you are using a blog this will be easier because most blog platforms update automatically after every post. Search engines love fresh content, in order for you to succeed you must constantly be updating and adding quality relevant content to your site or blog. These are the sites that get the most attention from the search engines, plus you will have a large following of regularly returning visitors. If your site never changes or isn’t very useful that gives no one a reason to return, there goes your traffic.

2) You must remember also that to achieve success online takes hard work and time. Nothing happens overnight so put that thought out of your head now. In addition to content you need inbound links from other relevant sites. Start a reciprocal link exchange directory that is categorized and exchange as many relevant links with preferably high page rank sites and blogs as possible. You also want inbound one way links, these are links pointing to you that you do not have to add a link on your site to theirs.

3) When you have focused on your SEO strategies you then need to worry about getting traffic. There are a few very effective ways of doing this. a) Article marketing, write and submit your niche related article to popular directories. This establishes you as an expert in your field as well as gives you valuable back links to your site. b) Forum posting and blog commenting. Make relevant comments in forums and on high page rank blogs, this allows you to leave your link, once again giving you back links. c) Free ad classifieds, this has to be done on an ongoing and regular basis to work. For example if you post several ads with craigslist (a page rank 7 site) at the least you get the back links.

These strategies will give you site exposure as well as back links to your site. In order to rank high in the search engines you need as many links as possible. This will give you a steady stream of targeted traffic coming to your offers.

Google SEO Checklist

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

There are many online business owners who don’t know anything about SEO. They have the wrong notion that owning a website is the only thing that you need to have to run an online business. But they must be reminded of the fact that their website is of no use if its not visible to a large amount of people. People will visit your website only when they come across it. There are hundreds and thousands of website in the Internet. It’s impossible for people to remember the URLs of so many websites. There are certain websites in the Internet which provides a search box where people can type what they are looking for and in return hundreds and thousands of websites appear which are relevant to the search query.

The websites which allow the users to search for a particular website is called the search engines and the terms that are searched in the search engines are called the keywords. The most popular search engine on the internet is Google. The first thing that an online business owner need to do is to carry out keyword research for his website. First they have to jot down a list of terms that are relevant to their niche. Then they should put those words in the Google keyword research tool. Then a huge list of keywords will come up. The list will also include the amount of competition for the keyword and the search volume for the keyword both global and local. Its advisable to select the keywords, which have medium, search volume not too high or not too low either.

However the competition must be high. Make sure that all the keywords that you choose are relevant to your niche. You can choose as many keywords you like there is no limit. However its advisable to choose not more than 10 keyword for a new website. Once you achieve higher ranking for these keywords you can always add more keywords. There are several methods of optimizing a website with the chosen keyword.

First you should use your main keyword while naming your domain because Google prefers domains, which contains the keyword. The most important places in a website from the SEO point-of-view are the Meta tags. The Meta tag consists of the Meta title, description and the keyword. Each page of a website should consist of unique Meta tag.

The Meta title should start with the keyword followed by 7-8 words followed by the company name.

The Meta description although promotional in nature should never be a sales speech. It should briefly describe what the page is all about. It should contain keyword but not more than two times. It should be not more than 160 characters. 140 characters is best.

The Meta keyword should consist of the keywords. However don’t mention more than 10 keywords in the Meta keyword section. When one use a header in the page of a website he should keep in mind that the header should be short and should consist of only one keyword. However if one uses a sub header then he can include one or two keyword, as its length should be a bit longer than the header ideally not more than 160 character.

Each page should focus on only one or two keyword and that keyword too should be used a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 times per 100 words. This is to prevent the search engine to see it as keyword spamming. The body content should be at least 400 words including the header. One should never use any domain name or email address here. However one can use the keyword as anchor text basis links.
