Five Copywriting Tips For Your Online Marketing Strategy

By Jon Allo

Your online advertising strategy can generate better results just by making a few simple changes to the text contained in your communications. There is a formula used by professional copywriters to motivate people to buy products and services and you can use that same formula on your website and other online marketing strategies.

While you most likely will not become a professional copywriter instantaneously, the five copywriting tips below can be used in your online advertising strategy to increase the response rates from your emails, adverts, blog posts, articles or other marketing communications.

1. Your Headline Must Get Attention.

Your headline needs to grab the attention of your reader quickly so that they want to know more. The headline is (pretty much) the most important element of your online advertising strategy. If your headline is weak or boring, most people will not read any further. A headline has to be exciting, alluring, and interesting.

2. What Is The Problem?

Your online advertising strategy will be more effective if you tell your audience that you can solve a problem for them. So when you are writing copy for your marketing messages make sure that you present the problem. Without a problem, people have no need to buy or take any kind of action at all. Presenting people with a problem is the same as letting them know they need to take the necessary action to resolve whatever the problem is. And you can help them do this.

You have to demonstrate that you have an understanding of the problem and can feel their pain. This is one of the key copywriting tips. You need to establish a connection with the reader to build trust and not talk down to them. Then, you can show them that there is a solution to their problem and you present that solution.

3. Format And Layout.

One of the most common mistakes when writing sales copy or any other kind of content is to break the content down into easy to read sections. Words that are written together in long paragraph form without breaks are challenging to read. Your audience are likely to skim rather than read the content if they read it at all.

To get your point across, your online advertising strategy should be to communicate your messages in a style that flows easily. Start with clean, crisp headlines followed by your storyline and then begin to break it up into sub-headlines.

Bullet points are useful to use too. They take long paragraphs and put them in an easier to read format. They immediately draw the focus of the reader and you can point out important details within bullet points.

4. Tell Them What To Do.

You may have the best copy ever written in your advertisement, but if you don’t tell people what to do, they won’t do it. Your online advertising strategy needs a call to action that moves people to act. Sometimes using the same old phrases (Buy now! or Order here!) can backfire. People tend to turn a blind eye to words that they have seen a thousand times.

Don’t forget the customer’s problem. This is where understanding the problem can work as a call to action. For instance, if you were selling products that treated acne successfully, rather than having a Buy Now call to action, you could use, “Yes! I want to fight my acne starting today!”

You want to think about your call to action and put yourself into the customer’s shoes. How is the problem hurting their life? What emotions are they battling because of it? Embarrassment? Social anxiety?

5. One Last Point.

The last, but by no means least, of these copywriting tips is to use a PS (and even a PPS) in your copy. Why? Some people skip the sales copy and head straight to the price point and postscripts to see what the page is summed up about. You can also use these to show what the customer might risk if he does not take advantage of your offer.
