The Painful Truth About Getting Your Website To The Top Of The Search Engines

July 5th, 2010

by Ivana Katz

“How do I get my website to come up on top of the search engines?” – That is one of the most frequently asked questions I get asked by clients.

The truth is, it’s not easy. With millions of websites on the internet right now and thousands being added each month, everyone is striving to do the same – to come up in the first spot (or on the first page).

In reality there are only 2 ways you can come up on top:

  1. Set up a pay per click advertising campaign, such as Google Adwords
  2. Optimise your website for keywords (also know as Search Engine Optimisation)

Keywords

Before you embark on either of these marketing methods, you need to understand about keywords.

Keywords or key phrases are the words that visitors type into a search engine to find a service or product. The best keywords are those that are commonly typed in by your potential customers, but which aren’t used much on your competitor’s websites. In other words, if you optimize your pages for keywords your potential customers use a lot, but your competitors haven’t thought of, you win. But here’s the catch…you’ll never get to know which are the best keywords for your website simply by guessing.

There are many tools you can use to find what keywords people are using, including Google’s Keyword Suggestion Tool.

If you are serious about finding the perfect keywords, I would recommend using a tool called Wordtracker – www.wordtracker.com. Through a series of simple steps, Wordtracker identifies the best keywords to use on each page of your website. Wordtracker’s suggestions are based on over 300 million keywords and phrases that people have used over the previous 90 days. (In other words, there is no “guessing” when you use Wordtracker. Everything is based on the keywords millions of people have actually typed into search engines.)

Best of all, their competitive analysis tool enables you to find those “best keywords” – the ones your potential customers use, but which your competitors don’t know about.

Once you have identified the best keywords, you can either run a pay per click marketing campaign or optimize your website for search engines.

Pay per click

Pay per click advertising is when an advertiser (you) pays for each qualified click that sends a search engine user to your web page. PPC requires you to bid on keywords or phrases that relate to your business. The best known pay per click services are Google AdWords and Overture. Generally you can bid from as little as a few cents per visitor. However, the more you bid the higher up in the search engine your advertisement will appear. Pay per click is a great way to deliver targeted and qualified visitors to your website at a very reasonable price.

It is a good idea to experiment with different PPC search engines to find the one that works best for you. In addition, you will need to spend time testing your keywords and ads.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search engines prefer to list sites that contain good content. In order to rank high you need to create a website that has maximum content and which uses lots of relevant keywords to your service and products.

Once you decide on the keywords, use them in

  • (a) Your website’s domain name
  • (b) The title of your page – This is displayed in the top bar of your browser window
  • (c) The heading of your home page
  • (d) The first paragraph of your home page
  • (e) Meta tags – Keywords, page title, description
  • (f) Titles of your graphics
  • (g) Alternative (Alt) tags – These appear in place of images when the browser preferences are set for text only.

Whilst it is important to use keywords as much as possible, it is also important you use them only if they are relevant and do not sound awkward. If you spam your keywords you may be penalised or even banned by some search engines.

Another important thing to consider when trying to optimize your website for search engines is to have as many relevant links pointing back to your website from other complementary sites. This can be done through link exchanges or by writing articles/posts and submitting them to article directories or forums. Ensure you include your domain name at the end of each article/post.

If this all seems too overwhelming, you can employ the services of a Search engine optimization company, who will make your website’s content more search engine friendly.

Please remember, having your website listed at the top of the search engines is not the only way to promote your website. There are lots of other ways you can get visitors to your site for little or no money.

Consider A Lunarpages Review

April 1st, 2010

by John D. Edwards

www in gold

Before you go out and purchase any hosting, you need to consider looking at a lunarpages review. You’ll find out that the company was established in 1998 and initially offered free web hosting. However, since they expanded in 2000, they have been pushing larger web hosting options and private servers. Even though they are not offering free hosting anymore, they have one of the largest web forums on the Internet today.

When looking at a lunarpages review, you’ll notice that they offer a lot of great promotions to help customers generate a lot of interest in their sites immediately after launching. Just some of the promotions that they are running are free ads across some of the biggest websites in the world. For instance, they offer, Google Adwords Credit, Myads Credit for Myspace, Facebook Credit for Ads on Facebook, and upwards of $700 of software and services included in the web hosting package! You will be hard pressed to find another company that offers such amazing services and advertising help with low cost in mind.

Lunarpages Basic Hosting for Only $4.95!

When looking at a lunarpages review, you’ll be amazed to see that the web hosting plans with this company start at around $2.95 a month. That’s right, less than $3

gets you an amazing starter package that will host most websites without much complicate. The starter package gives users 5 GB storage, 50 GB of Data transfer, 5 email addresses, 24/7 support and $700 in free bonuses! Most blogs, sites, and stores won’t generate much more than that, and at $2.95 a month you can’t really argue with the possibilities that exist with this starter option.

For those looking for other hosting options, a lunarpages review will explain that there are options that cost upwards of $5 for reseller hosting, and two very distinct options for dedicated servers. If you’re looking for Windows hosting, you’ll be able to take advantage of this company’s price of $64.95 a month. For those looking for Linux Dedicated Hosting, you’ll only have to spend $99 a month. These two options are not usually this low, and really offer a wealth of opportunities for those looking to host gaming servers, hundreds of websites, and thousands of domain names. Not only that, you’ll get free setup, free domain, and a free dedicated IP address.

rows of server racks

There are literally thousands of companies out there pushing lesser plans or extreme plans that you don’t necessarily need. Most web users don’t need massive amounts of data transfer and space, and while it is important to plan for the future, you’ll find that it’s not easy filling up space. Most sites will be hard pressed to fill up 40 to 50 gb of space and get enough visitors to take up bandwidth. That’s not to say that it’s not possible, but the average beginner website will not be nearly as massive.

Remember, when picking the right host for your website, consider lunarpages as one of the better companies. They have been generating attention since 1998 and appear to have no end in sight. With award winning customer service, variable plans to fit all needs; the company continues to move forward in a crowded hosting market.

Free PDF Download Available

February 26th, 2010

I have prepared a PDF that includes the information in the new WebSite Basics section of the main site. I am offering this as a FREE DOWNLOAD for those who might be interested.

The PDF contains the content of the articles in the Basics section. If you are interested in owning a website but do not have much experience there may be information that would be of value for you. If you download the PDF you may also wish to share it with your friends. While it would be nice to send them a link to the download page, you could attach a copy of the PDF to an email and send it to them.

This is the first PDF that I have produced. I downloaded the Open Office productivity suite and installed it on my computer. Open Office is an open source productivity suite that includes functions similar to Microsoft Office. It has the added functionality of exporting to PDF. This process proved to be painless and so the PDF was born. If you would like to download your copy visit the Before You Buy a Website main site today.

Thanks, and enjoy your download. Feel free to comment either here in the blog or through the comment section on the main site. Tell me if the PDF helped in any way.

I’m Baaack with More Article-Exchange Observations

February 20th, 2010

The link problem was not quite as bad as I first thought. I had a typo in my link that I posted with the article. The first link is still broken, but I uploaded a page with the typo file name, so the second link in the article does work. The article is still at the end of the list and does not show in the list of recent articles. There are supposedly over 200 instances of this article directory but few of the articles that I checked (I did only check a few) have been read more than a few times. Many on my page show 0 or 1 for the number of views. I suspect that those showing a 1 show it because the author viewed his own article one time.

I also paid a bit of attention to the links in the footer box. These all appear to direct to pages put up by the directory owner. YouTube had pulled a couple of the videos and at least one other link is broken. This is an interesting concept. The major benefit, if there is a major benefit for anyone, seems to be to the owner of the directory. I am not so sure that I approve, but I will observe for a while more before I pass a final judgment. I did do a search and did not turn up complaints on the subject, but perhaps I did not dig deep enough.

Article-Exchange Update

February 20th, 2010

I posted an article to my article-exchange directory last evening. This was an article that I wrote to promote my site Gemstone Jewelry Now.

There is minimal instruction on the site as to posting procedures, just the various input boxes for title, description, article body, and resource box. I screwed up on the format for the resource box and ended up with no working links. It appears that the software does recognize an URL in the standard format and that you can use html to put in anchor text, but I will need to try again to be sure. There was also no space between the end of the article and the beginning of the resource box info. I will try adding a couple of spaces at the end of the article next time.

My major complaint with the directory software is that it dumped the article at the end of the category. I should go back and check to see if that is still the case, possibly the owner of the database can check an article off and it will move to the top of the list. Another thought that I had was that the broken links may have flagged the article and sent it to the end of the line. If this is really the way that the software works there is not much hope of a direct click to a site from the article even though it appears many times. Users are not likely to make it to the end of the category unless they know that the freshest content is at the end. This is the reverse of the way that every other article directory that I have seen works. The pages may still get indexed and the links count, but I would expect no direct traffic.

This may be a good thing for the directory owner as his articles may appear on page one for any category, but for those others adding content promotion would be the only way that I would expect the article to be viewed. The owner of the directory does give instructions on how to list the articles on RSS feeds (something other article sites do automatically).

I do need to go to my installation and make some further observations. At this point the jury is still out on the utility of these article directories. They have not been in place long enough to see if they produce any traffic either directly to the site or due to articles posted to the directory. I will have another update when I have some more thoughts on this topic.

The World SoapBox Article Directory

February 19th, 2010

I ran across a free script for an article directory and installed on my site, The World SoapBox. I will be watching the results as I have some questions about how this script operates.

The database for the script resides on a remote server. The script calls for the content over the Internet. I do have some news feeds and they do get indexed, so maybe the articles will be indexed as part of the site. The pages of this and all WordPress blogs are called from a local database and the pages are built by the script at the time when there is a request, but they get indexed. I am hoping that these articles get indexed as content on my site.

There are several things that I will be keeping my eye on. I will try to post a report when I have enough information to draw some conclusions.

Check out the World SoapBox Article Directory and tell me what you think.

CyberSquatting Case Study

January 31st, 2010

I am a member of the KompoZer forum. There was recently a case where a domain name had expired and been purchased by someone in Russia. This is a case of cybersquatting almost certainly. I am writing up the details in an article on the main site, so I will not present all of the details here.

CyberSquatting has been going on almost as long as the Internet has been in existence. There are various ways in which this is carried out. I have an earlier article that discusses another aspect of cybersquatting, although that case was more a matter of speculating in a domain name. The topic is addressed by various governing bodies. It is possible that the current case could be resolved through an Icann procedure, but it may be more trouble than it is worth in this case.

Have you had any experiences with CyberSquatting? What are your thoughts on the subject?

Another Basic Topic

January 30th, 2010

As I was out strolling the web this evening my attention was drawn to another web basic that I had not specifically discussed in the Website Basics section. I had a page on navigation, but basic to navigation is the link system. I wrote up an article on the topic and posted it to the Website Basics section this evening. I expect to find a few more topics and I am soliciting suggestions for basic topics that I have not covered.

Leave a comment in this blog and you will get a do follow link. Follow the instructions in the comment section to get a good keyword link to your site.

The Website Basics Section

January 28th, 2010

I have just uploaded the last few pages for the current phase of this website update. There are about 15 new pages on the site at this point. I will try to revisit the site soon to add even more content.

The history of this site is this. The site was originally developed because an acquaintance bid on a couple of sites on ebay and won the auction. He had no idea of the mechanics of the web or Internet Marketing. He bought into the line that he could own these ‘money making’ websites. I think that he has made some small change with his purchase, but probably not up to the level of the dream. I wanted to provide some information that might alert prospective buyers about some of the practices that go on on the web.

I  did not have much content on the site and there was really little reason for people to visit the site. Since the information that I had on the site was aimed at new hopeful Internet Marketers I decided to expand the scope of the site to include all who are thinking about building or owning a website. And so . . . The Website Basics section was born.

I originally considered just a few pages to cover the material, but one thing lead to another. As I was writing some of the content I would think of another topic that should be discussed and some other features that should be added to the site. So now, phase one of the re-purposing of this site is now on the web. Stop by the main site to see the update: Before You Buy a Website

This blog is now ‘do follow’ and uses KeywordLuv so leave an honest comment and get a backlink. I do have the blog set so that I manually authorize comments. Your quality comment will show up when I check it off. Thands
